The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is as one of the best elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai as our track record of sustainable and ethical treatment speaks for itself.

Tour Code : CNX001

The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is as one of the best elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai as our track record of sustainable and ethical treatment speaks for itself. Our elephant reserve in Chiang Mai has many options for visitors to experience the wonderful elephants of Thailand. Here is what we have lined up for visitors looking for a half day elephant tour in Chiang Mai. Our trained English-speaking guides give visitors insight into the behavior and the personal history of our elephants. The elephant mahouts help people realize incredible life experiences such as feeding the elephants by hand or bathing elephants in Chiang Mai.

The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is an ethical elephant sanctuary near Chiang Mai (only a 1.5 hour drive away). You can visit the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary at two different times during the day. The morning visit takes place from 6:30 am to 12:30 pm and the afternoon visit takes place from 13:30 to 18:30 pm. The package deal includes two traditional Thai buffet meals, pick up and drop off to your accommodation in Chiang Mai (terms and conditions apply), drinking water and even food for feeding the elephants!

When you arrive at the Chiang Mai Elephant Sanctuary, the guides will give you a basic overview of the tour, some information about the elephants and then traditional Karen clothes to wear during the tour. Since the tour can get messy and wet (in a very fun way!) we suggest that you bring some things with you. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a bathing suit, a towel and a change of clothes to our Chiang Mai elephant conservation center.

You can also bring a camera with you but if you’re worried about taking photos with the elephants you need not worry. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary offers a photography service at no extra charge.

We’ve even got other exciting programs such as a ‘Full Day Visit’, a ‘One Day Walk with the Elephants’ and a ‘2 Days and 1 Night Visit’. With the ‘Full Day Visit’, you can spend even more time with our elephants in the mud spa or just spend time with them. The ‘One Day Walk with Elephants’ program starts with a jungle trek with the elephants in their natural habitat, after the trek you will join half-day afternoon visitors for the rest of the program. The ‘2 Days and 1 Night Visit’ is our most unique yet comprehensive experience. With this program you will get to experience all the facets of the elephant reserve in Chiang Mai as well as other aspects of Thai culture in the area and some of nearby natural beauty.

Throughout your visit at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, you will be feeding, bathing and even playing with the elephants. It is also important to us that you learn as much as possible about the elephants and why it is important to protect them. With the money we raise from visits and donations, we can contribute to elephant welfare, by rescuing them, feed them, provide veterinary care as well as land and infrastructure for them to live on.

Although I liked the experience I felt it was somewhat staged and the elephants were still performing in a way. It was all about getting photos with them up close and I’ll put my hand up and admit I wanted to get some good photos like everyone else and I guess there lies the problem, the elephants are still used for our entertainment/enjoyment. I did the morning visit and the same day there is also an afternoon visit so the elephants do the same thing everyday twice a day. They are brought to the pen enclosed area we feed them bananas; then we were allowed in the enclosed area were they were feed bamboo while we patted them and got our photos; next one elephant was picked for us to wash and measure to calculate its weight; next we went to a pond and bucketed water over the elephants- some people just threw it in their faces, not sure they liked it and pretty sure if the staff wasn’t around they wouldn’t of stayed and lastly the mud again not sure how much they liked everyone rubbing mud on them. Most of them left and a couple that stayed only stayed because they were being fed. Although I don’t think in anyway they are treated cruelly and I think they are looked after well I don’t think the elephants should have to do this everyday, twice a day for our entertainment.

Our family enjoyed the trip very much. It was an eye opening for our ten years old kid. Involved in activities like feeding the elephants, mud bathe and river water bathe the elephants which are rare experience where you can never do it in the zoo. So, never miss this opportunity when you are here in Thailand.
